Stopping the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

posted May 23, 2010

The most practical way to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil spill remains the containment dome, the structure that would fit over the well head and pipe oil to the surface. BP appears to have abandoned this idea due to initial clogging by methane hydrate ice crystals, but not enough has been done to conquer this problem. An electric heating coil, for example, could be wrapped around the neck of the dome to prevent icing.
